چکیده

Micro and nanomechanical resonators with ultra-low dissipation have great potential as useful quantum resources. The superfluid micromechanical resonators presented here possess several advantageous characteristics: straightforward thermalization, dissipationless flow, and in situ tunability. We identify and quantitatively model the various dissipation mechanisms in two resonators, one fabricated from borosilicate glass and one from single crystal quartz. As the resonators are cryogenically cooled into the superfluid state, the damping from thermal effects and from the normal fluid component are strongly suppressed. At our lowest temperatures, damping is limited solely by internal dissipation in the substrate materials, and reach quality factors up to 913,000 at 13 mK. By lifting this limitation through substrate material choice and resonator design, modeling suggests that the resonators could reach quality factors as high as 10 at 100 mK, putting this architecture in an ideal position to harness mechanical quantum effects and to study superfluids in confined geometries.

Superfluid optomechanics: coupling of a superfluid to a superconducting condensate

We investigate the low loss acoustic motion of superfluid He parametrically coupled to a very low loss, superconducting Nb TE011 microwave resonator, forming a gram-scale, sideband resolved, optomechanical system. We demonstrate the detection of a series of acoustic modes with quality factors as high as × 1.4 107. At higher temperatures, the lowest dissipation modes are limited by an intrinsic ...

Ultra-high Q Acoustic Resonance in Superfluid He

We report the measurement of the acoustic quality factor of a gram-scale, kilo-hertz frequency superfluid resonator, detected through the parametric coupling to a superconducting niobium microwave cavity. For temperature between 400mK and 50mK, we observe a T−4 temperature dependence of the quality factor, consistent with a 3-phonon dissipation mechanism. We observe Q factors up to 1.4 · 10, co...

Nonlinear Modeling and Investigating the Nonlinear Effects on Frequency Response of Silicon Bulk-mode Ring Resonator

This paper presents a nonlinear analytical model for micromechanical silicon ring resonators with bulk-mode vibrations. A distributed element model has been developed to describe the dynamic behavior of the micromechanical ring resonator. This model shows the nonlinear effects in a silicon ring resonator focusing on the effect of large amplitudes around the resonance frequency, material and ele...
